We are pleased to announce The 2001 Magdalen Islands Cup," at
which the CANADIAN WINDSURFING CHAMPIONSHIPS once again returns to these
Islands after four successful events in the early 1990s This year
it's August 27
to September 1st, and adding a second great week, the "King of the
Islands Freestyle" event, September 2nd to September 8th.
For the Canadians Championships, there will be a $20,000 Pro purse and $10,000 worth of prizes for the Amateur contestants. The "King of the Islands Freestyle" event is an Open event which is expected to attract the top world aerial and trick artists from across Canada and around the world, with their ever-growing repertoire of amazing maneuvers (they're inventing them every day it seems), there's a $30,000 (Cdn.) purse at stake.
The trip alone to the beautiful endless beaches of this isolated chain of islands in the middle of the warm waters of the Gulf of St. Lawrence is an adventure not soon forgotten. Friends and families of competitors will enjoy this wilderness marvel (at times walruses play on deserted beaches on the Plage de la pointe de l'est), with its sophisticated French cooking and artisans, and charming accommodation waiting for you.
Wild ocean sailing as well as flat-water lagoon speed sailing with winds from all directions are guaranteed to satisfy your shredding appetites. For others, sea excursions, canoeing, and biking and hiking the dunes or miniature mountains and forests -- or simply observing nature alone in the great wide spaces -- all this await you, a five-hour ferry ride north of P.E.I.
Some of the events during the two weeks: the "Air-Challenge Kitesurfing Cup," a fun for both pros and amateurs * An open-air Trade Show for windsurfing, kitesurfing and outdoor sports, open to the public * An Opening and Closing Ceremony Dinner party open to all, with mussels, fries and beer, and live entertainment
More events: a Pro-Am 6-km "Big Hill" long distance race around Ile d'Entrée off the Cap aux Meules harbour * Pro kitesurfing, slalom and freestyle exhibitions * beach-board sailing on some of our wide, hard stretches of sand * a speed course on perfectly flat water off the north lagoon shore...
And more: demo boards and sails, and kiteboards for testing * Women's --and men's -- swimsuit contests * Kite acrobatics and combats * talk the World Cup pros out of their trade secrets
And finally: fine island food at all times * all-night nightclubs * Big Lobster dinner at the Closing Ceremonies and World Cup Awards, with a variety show.
